Planet Earth Article (14/07/14)

FaultLab PhD student Ekbal Hussain has had an article published in the Summer 2014 issue of NERC's Planet Earth Magazine.  The article, entitled "Getting ready for the next big one", discusses the seismic hazard threatening Istanbul due to its proximity to the North Anatolian Fault.  You can read the article here.

FaultLab at AGU 2013 (10/01/14)

FaultLab participants Greg Houseman, David Cornwell, Niyazi Turkelli and David Thompson were in San Francisco to convene the session T024:  New views on strike-slip fault zones.  It covered a variety of geographic locations (San Andreas Fault, USA; Alpine Fault, New Zealand; Sumatran strike-slip faulting; North Anatolian Fault Zone to name but a few) and disciplines (geodesy, seismology, structural geology, deep fault drilling, numerical modelling), making for an interesting, stimulating and extremely well attended session.  In addition to convening, 2 talks and 2 poster were presented by the FaultLab project:

T22D-06. Seismicity and Crustal Anisotropy Beneath the Western Segment of the North Anatolian Fault: Results from a Dense Seismic Array
Niyazi Turkelli; Ugur Teoman; Selda Altuncu Poyraz; Didem Cambaz; Ahu K. Mutlu; Metin Kahraman; Gregory A. Houseman; Sebastian Rost; David A. Thompson; David G. Cornwell; Murat Utkucu; Levent Gülen

T23E-2633. Detailed Northern Anatolian Fault Zone crustal structure from receiver functions
David G. Cornwell; Metin Kahraman; David A. Thompson; Gregory A. Houseman; Sebastian Rost; Niyazi Turkelli; Ugur Teoman; Selda Altuncu Poyraz; Levent Gülen; Murat Utkucu

FaultLab PhDs present work (10/01/14)

FaultLab PhD students Katie Farrell and Ekbal Hussain have been presenting their work at a number of conferences over the last few months (see below).

Katie was at the annual Tectonic Studies Group (TSG) meeting at Cardiff University (6th-8th January, 2014).

Ekbal attended the Geology for Global Development Conference at the Geological Society, London (23rd October, 2013) and the Living Planet Symposium in Edinburgh (9th-13th September, 2013).  You can download his poster from Edinburgh here.  Ekbal also wrote an interesting blog about the seismic risk to Istanbul.
