Cambrian Quartzite Formation

stac22.jpg (63462 bytes)
Boundary between older 'False-bedded' or Basal Quartzite Member and younger Pipe Rock Member of the Cambrian (Eriboll) Quartzites, Assynt.  Herring bone cross-laminations are clearly observed in the former, whilst the latter contains lighter stripes of vertical 'pipes' or worm burrows (skolithus).  This locality is within the foreland of the Moine Thrust Zone; within the thrust zone the pipes are often sheared from the vertical.
