Sheared Pipes

Trumpet pipes
Trumpet pipes (monocriterion) in the Pipe Rock Member of the Eriboll Quartzite Formation, bedding plane sections. Upper, undeformed (approximately circular) pipes, Coire a, Bhraic, Assynt. Lower, deformed (elliptical) pipes due to thrusting, Ben Heilem, Eriboll.

Stac of Glencoul, bedding normal section
Looking ~N beneath the Stac of Glencoul summit at a bedding normal section, showing an originally vertical 'pipe' in the Pipe Rock Member (PR) of the Cambrian Quartzites.  The pipe has been sheared over by an angle gamma due to the emplacement of the Moine Thrust nappe above and would produce an elliptical outcrop on a bedding plane section, similar to that shown above at Ben Heilem.
