Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Physics

Email address: m.h.smith@leeds.ac.uk

Biography

Qualifications: BSc Physics and PhD Physics, UMIST

Memberships/Fellowships: Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society

Research Interests: Atmospheric aerosols (especially of marine origin), effects of aerosols on clouds and climate, cloud microphysics.

Mike Smith joined the School in January 2000 from the University of Sunderland where he founded the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. After earlier work at UMIST on various aspects of cloud physics, he specialised in the study of marine aerosols, their impact upon atmospheric turbidity and upon stratocumulus cloud formation. This work led to interests in the sources and sinks of atmospheric aerosol of all types and their effects upon cloud properties and climate, as well as to studies of the roles of aerosol particulates on the chemistry of atmospheric trace gases.
