Biography

I studied Chemistry in my undergraduation followed by a Masters program in Atmospheric Science from the University of Calcutta. I graduated in August 2011 and started working in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in a research project that investigated the evolution of clouds in the Indian Continental Tropical Convergence Zone (CTCZ) using satellite observations (2011-2013).

Currently I am PhD student at the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science in the University of Leeds working with Prof. Prof. Ken Carslaw, Dr. Kirsty Pringle. I am employed by the CLOUD project at CERN that focuses on measuring particle formation rates in the atmosphere in a unique cloud chamber, capable of replicating atmospheric conditions. My PhD project within CLOUD involves understanding how aerosols influence cloud properties and impact the climate with an emphasis on aerosols formed from biogenic VOCs.

Project title

Climate impacts of biogenic aerosols

My project involves implementing new experimental information from a chamber study (CLOUD) in a global aeroosl model (GLOMAP) and assess the atmospheric relevance of the findings.

In 2013, CLOUD found experimental evidence of particle formation in the atmosphere (nucleation) initiated and sustained by oxidation products of biogenic organic compounds only. My work has involved modelling the process to find out what it means for the present day and preindustrial atmosphere and hence assessing the radiative impacts. I am now investigating how the representation of organic compounds and processes they participate impacts our estimation of organic aerosols/particle number concentration.
