Project title: Inorganic and microbial pathways controlling selenium mobility in natural environments.
Supervisors: Dr LianeG. Benning, Dr Rob Newton
Start date: October 2006
Funding bodies: Dorothy Hodgkin International Postgraduate Award (EPSRC/Shell)
My research project focuses on elucidating the role of bacteria and inorganic iron bearing phases in the breakdown of organic matter and the oxidation of sulphide minerals and to quantify the link between the release of selenium compounds and their pathways into aquifers. The results will provide a quantitative understanding of the mobilisation pathway of selenium and will provide a link between rock weathering, organic matter degradation and geochemical selenium cycling and enhance our understanding of the influence of black shales on groundwater quality in relation to selenium. Furthermore, the acquired knowledge will be helpful for development of remediation strategies to improve aquifers quality, and thereby will contribute to improving water quality within the framework of a sustainable development plan.
