The long and short axes of the ellipse are related to the greatest and least extensional strains. The value of the original length, l0, is the radius of the circle, that is 1. The change in length is given by the distance between the circle and the ellipse, e1. The same applies to e2, except that the difference between the original length and the final length is now negative.
