The state of redevelopment in mid 1997 in downtown Beirut. During the reconstruction, a remarkable series of archeological rescue digs excavated the Roman and Byzantine city that occupied the site. These give an insight into the devastation wrought on the Roman city by the earthquake in 551 AD.
