An aside: tectonites

When faced with distorted rocks structural geologists can try to classify them simply in terms of the type of shape fabric they contain. Distorted rocks are called tectonites (rocks showing the effects of tectonics). Rocks where all the grains are pancake shaped (oblate) are called s-tectonites, the "s" standing for schistosity (a fancy name for a planar rock fabric). When the grains are aligned and cigar shaped (prolate), the rock is called an l-tectonite, with the "l" standing for lineation. When rocks have both a linear alignment and a foliation they are described as l-s tectonites.
