Pantelleria:

The Pantelleria field trips were led by Giovanni Orsi and consisted of a short field visit and a full day excursion. We travelled in a cavalcade of cars that gave all passers by and interesting sight!!

Excursion to 'Pandalleria'!!

Trip 1: A short trip to the caldera rim by Lake Bagna Aqua.

Trip 2: A full day excursion where we were able to see the full range of volcanic products from the local volcnao, including the now famous 'Green Tuff'!

Dr. Peggy Hellweg, our 'glamour girl', providing a lovely scale for the fall and surge deposits.

We were able to see 2 calderas, the older La Vecchia caldera (114 ka) and the newer Monastero caldera (50ka) which is associated with the eruption of the famous 'green tuff'!

The magic caper machine!

Sicily - Mount Etna

A post workshop field trip was held in Catania, Sicily, led by Marco Neri.

This included an incredible trip to the summit of Mount Etna, in the tourist trucks, then a walks around one of the craters in the cold wind! We were able to look into the craters, inhale plenty of sulpher and pick up rocks that were a little warm to the touch!

We were also shown the range of damage that the volcano had caused, through its eruptions (as in the above picture) and earthquakes associated both from its activity and from the regional tectonics (see picture below).

A local church being held up while repairs takeplace. Earthquakes have damaged a great deal of the buildings on south and south eastern flanks of the volcano.
