Strain analysis methodologies - Rf/f method

  • For each deformed object, define the approximate ellipse by:

1. measuring the long axis length;

2. measuring the (orthogonal) short axis length;

3. calculate the axial ratio (Rf = long/short);

4. measure the orientation f of the long axis relative to a fixed reference direction.

Orientations

  • Plot the pairs of values of Rf and f on a graph.
  • Standard graphs are available which are contoured for values of initially ellipticity of the ellipses (Ri).
  • Compare the data with the standards using the 50% split line to help: the orientation of the long axis of the ellipse is obtained by referring the maximum value of f to your reference direction.
