Balanced cross section of the Himalaya. The lower section, which represents the undeformed state of the Himalatan rocks, was reconstructed from the pieces in the upper section. The shortening can be obtained with the length of the lower section as the original length and the distance from the left side of the upper section to the point of the red unit on the right as the deformed length.
