Extending layersAn extended beleminite fossil seen on a cleavage plane in Liassic-age shales at Leytron, Swiss Alps. The boudinaged segments of the fossil are dark-coloured while newly-precipitated calcite (white) fills the gaps. The belemnite fossil was more competent (higher viscosity) than the shales around it at the time of deformation.
