Ductile structures - Portvasgo
Picture gallery Picture gallery

Portvasgo is a small cove on the north coast of Scotland. It contains spectacular deformation structures associated with shearing of a metasedimentary sequence (called the Moine) and its older basement (the Lewisian). You can see examples of the original state of these rocks by clicking here. These units are both strongly deformed by shearing associated with building the ancient Caledonian mountains (about 430 million years ago). You can see the types of deformation structures found by using the picture gallery.
