At the Stack of Glencoul you will be able to quantify shear
strain from deformed pipes and from the relationship between cleavage and bedding.
You can use this to discover deformation gradients - charting the intensity
of strain as you approach major tectonic contacts. You should be able to plot
these data on stereonets to chart angular changes. If the strain is ideal simple
shear then both the pipes and the cleavage should, FOR THE SAME LOCATION, give
the same value of shear stran (gamma). However, if the strain is not ideal simple
shear, different relationships are possible. For example, if ther is a component
of bed thinning (layer parallel extension) the cleavage will give an apparent
shear strain higher for that in the pipes.
