
This simplified map shows the distribution of metamorphic rocks grouped into so-called "metamorphic zones". It was published by BGS as an inset to their 1:250 000 compilation map. Notice how the metamorphic grade decreases from east to west within the Moine, approaching the Moine Thrust. The two metamorphic zones in the Lewisian pre-date the Torridonian strata which rest unconformably above. The junction between the granulite and amphibolite facies Lewisian corresponds with a major Proterozoic-age deformation zone - the Laxford Front.
