Nigel Woodcock & Rob Strachan (eds) 2000. The geological history of Britain and Ireland. Blackwell Science.
Modern account of British geology, with a nice emphasis on the older rocks… including NW Scotland .
Craig, G. (ed) The geology of Scotland. The Geological Society, London.
A bit dated but still worth a look.
A.W.A. Rushton, A.W. Owen, R.M. Owens and J.K. Prigmore (1999) British Cambrian to Ordovician Stratigraphy (GCR Volume No. 18). Joint Nature Conservation Commission.
Expensive semi-technical report on conservation sites, including the few in NW Scotland. A volume covering structural sites in NW Scotland (Moine, Lewisian, Torridonian) is due out…. who knows when….(Dec 2004 on the JNCC website…)
David Oldroyd: 1990. The Highlands Controversy: constructing geological knowledge through fieldwork in nineteenth century Britain. Chicago Univ Press. 438pp.
Excellent account of how thrust tectonics was “discovered” in NW Scotland.
A.D. Stewart, 2002. The Later Proterozoic Torridonian Rocks of Scotland: their sedimentation, geochemistry and origin. Geological Society Memoir n. 24, 130 pp.
Definitive memoir to the Torridonian for the specialist or fanatic. A tour-de-force.
Johnstone, G.S. & Mykura, W. 1989. The Northern Highlands of Scotland (4th ed). British Regional Geology series. BGS, HMSO, 219pp.
A modern memoir … Rather out-dated by recent researches and a bit staid. Never the less this is widely available and worth a look.
Gibbons, W. & Harris, A.L. (eds) 1994. A revised correlation of Precambrian rocks in the British Isles. Geological Society Special Report 22. 110 pp.
Has chapters on Lewisian, Torridonian and Moine. Some of dating in the Lewisian is showing its age!
British Geological Survey, Assynt Special Sheet, 1:50 000 geological map, 1965.
Still available as a facsimile from the British Geological Survey.
M.R.W. Johnson and I. Parsons 1979. Macgregor and Phemister’s Geological Excursion Guide to the Assynt District of Sutherland by. Edinburgh Geological Society, 76 pp.
Still available in some bookshops, this represents great value but is rather dated. Nice colour maps though.
I. Allison, F. May and R.A. Strachan (eds) 1988. An excursion guide to the Moine geology of the Scottish Highlands. Scottish Academic Press.
A bit techy and now just about out-of-print. New version in the offing for 2005.
British Geological Survey, 2004. Exploring the landscape of Assynt.
Due out any day - this walkers guide with simplified map is aimed at the casual visitor wanting to start exploring the geology. A bit of a break with tradition for BGS - and none the worse for that!
