The external zones of the Alps, shown as coloured on the adjacent map, lie to the west of a major tectonic break - called the Frontal Pennine Thrust. This carries the internal zones (now grey on the map). The coutryside of the external zones is highly variable - from the foothills of the subalpine chains (seen in the title slide above) to the highest parts of the Alps - the Mont Blanc massif.
