Transitions to a Low Carbon Economy
Funding body: UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and E.ON UK Ltd.
Amount: £233,800
Duration: 2008-2011
A £2.1 million proposal 'Transitions to a low carbon economy', grant reference number EP/F022832/1, has been funded through the EPSRC/E.ON Strategic Partnership. The project is funded 50% by EPSRC and 50% by EON.
The project is a consortium led by Prof Geoff Hammond of Bath University and includes the Universities of Loughborough, Strathclyde, Surrey, East Anglia, Leeds, Imperial college and the Policy Studies Institute.
The overall aim is to develop a set of potential transition pathways for the UK energy system to a low carbon future, and undertake integrated assessments of the technical and economic feasibility, social and environmental potential and acceptability of these pathways.

To achieve this the proposal seeks to learn from past transitions to help explore future transitions and what might enable or avoid them; to design and evaluate transition pathways towards alternative socio-technical energy systems and infrastructures for a low carbon future; and to understand, and where appropriate model, the changing roles, influences and opportunities of large and small actors in the dynamics of transitions.
