Participatory Rangeland Monitoring and Management in the Kalahari, Botswana
Funding body: UNEP/GEF, Royal Society, EU Grant for Young Researchers, Explorers Club and Royal Scottish Geographical Society
Amount: £2,400
Duration: 2000-2005
Summary
Bringing together knowledge from local communities and academia to enable different stakeholders to work hand-in-hand to assess and respond appropriately to land degradation. Effective monitoring and appropriate management are essential to improve the sustainability of rangeland use. By facilitating rangeland users to monitor environmental change and respond with appropriate management interventions, it may be possible to enhance the sustainability of rangelands on a large scale. However rangeland monitoring and management advice remain the domain of outside experts throughout most of the world. By developing environmental indicators and management options in close collaboration with rangeland users, this project will facilitate those who live and work in rangelands to manage them more sustainably with minimal outside help.
