The Academic Lineage of David Gubbins
To mark the retirement of Professor David Gubbins FRS from the University of Leeds in 2010 and his contributions to geomagnetism and seismology, his academic lineage was researched by three of his descendents:
Phil Livermore (Leeds; an academic Grandchild),
Andy Jackson (ETH; an academic child) and
Graeme Sarson (Newcastle; an academic child).
With input from a large number of others and using data already uploaded to the Math Genealogy Project, David's family tree, both forward and backwards in time, was painstakingly researched. In an academic family tree like this, the usual parent-child links are redefined by supervisor-student. When David retired in september 2010, he had 96 academic descendents (counting all the generations down to great-grandchildren). All the data has been uploaded onto the Math Genealogy Project database and we encourage this to be kept current as far as possible, so please add any new descendents.
Historical note
Some of the links back to Newton are somewhat tenuous in places as formal research training in Cambridge didn't exist until the late 19th century: the early links are more of tutor-student relationship.
NB Apologies for any links omitted.
