Congratulations to Professor Andy Shepherd, who has been appointed a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holder for his work on assessing how polar ice sheets contribute to global sea level rise.

Professor Shepherd is one of 28 new award holders in subjects ranging from radar-tracking the movement patterns of bees to the development of machine learning for precision medicine.

The scheme, which is jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), aims to provide universities with additional support to enable them to attract science talent from overseas and retain respected UK scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.

Professor Shepherd is also Director of the Centre for Polar Observation & Modelling (CPOM), one of two NERC-funded centres for studying the Earth from space hosted at Leeds.  You can read more about CPOM and COMET, the Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics, here.
