SHIP - SHip emissions: Impact and Parameterization

Principal Investigator: Mat Evans and Christina Perez

Sponsor: NERC

Start Date: Feb 2006
End Date: Feb 2009

Description

Emissions of oxides of nitrogen from shipping make up approximately 5-10% of the global NOx source. This value is increasing as global trade increases. Incorporating these emissions into global models is difficult though as due to the non-linear nature of the chemistry and the large grid-boxes inherent in global models. This leads to significant error in the models. The project will attempt to use recent mathematical developments to parameterize ship emissions in a form suitable for inclusion into a global model. It will then assess the impact of these emissions on the composition of the atmosphere in a more accurate way than has been possible in the past
