Summary
The Mineral-fluid Interface Reactivity Early Stage Training Network (MIR-EST) is comprised of five universities located in Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. The network offers structured training for students pursuing a PhD or Masters degree. It is intended to produce young scientists to fill needs in industry, consulting engineering firms, regulatory agencies, and local government, in addition to academia.
The core objective of the MIR-EST is to provide state-of-the-art training and professional development to young scientists in the field of mineral-fluid reactivity. Mineral-fluid reactions, including dissolution, absorption, nucleation, precipitation, and solid solution formation are key to solving pressing issues, such as the development of smart coatings on body implants or drug delivery systems as well as minimizing risk in groundwater extraction and developing safer pesticide applications.
