Ovens and furnaces

In general:

  • Ovens are generally capable of going up to 250ºC and
  • Furnaces up to higher temperatures (generally up to 1100ºC).

When operating ovens at lower temperatures standard laboratory PPE is required. This includes laboratory coat, safety glasses and nitrile gloves. For higher temperatures thermally insulating gloves are required.

Never put flammable or volatile materials in the ovens or furnaces. Never put measuring glassware in the ovens (e.g. volumetric flasks and measuring cylinders)

Always make sure you write on door label what you have added to the furnace and when you will be finished. Also, please indicate whether others can add samples to the oven while you are using it – in this way we can reduce the number of ovens being used at any one time.

After you have using the furnace make sure you TURN THE FURNACE OFF WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED.
