Project details

Project Title: Assessing the scope of PES in relation to GHG emissions in agri-ecosystems

Supervisors: Prof. Mette Termansen and Dr. Nesha Beharry-Borgg

Funding: Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan

Start date: February 2009

Project Outline

This research project proposes to investigate the scope for designing a Payment for Ecosystem Services scheme to meet climate change mitigation targets in the agricultural sector as the emissions from this sector is not regulated through the EU tradable quota agreements. This research proposes to identify areas of highest potential for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in agri-ecosystems and secondly, to investigate potential PES schemes and analyse the extent to which such schemes may be cost-effective. The first one will entail using outputs from a land use model, and thus will explore the changes in the greenhouse gas emission at national scale. This will be useful in identifying the areas of highest mitigation potential. Subsequently, the second phase will involve using choice modelling to explore the farmer's preferences for participation in PES schemes, which will also provide an extent to which such schemes can be cost-effective.
