Biography

Richard read Astrophysics at University College, Cardiff, before going on to teach physics in London. During that time he took a degree in Geology at UCL-Birkbeck and was inspired to switch to Earth Science. He subsequently studied for a DPhil at the University of Oxford followed by positions as a postdoctoral fellow at Berkeley, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Richard joined IGT as a lecturer in September 2009.

Richard's research interests focus on the structure and dynamics of the Earth's surface, with particular emphasis on zones of active continental deformation. He employs structural analysis and a broad range of isotopic dating techniques in order to constrain timescales, rates and processes associated with the initiation and evolution of faults. Currently, he is developing the use of in situ 36Cl cosmogenic exposure dating in order to test theoretical models of earthquake clustering in active normal fault systems and to examine the relationship between recurrence variability and fault geometry. Richard is also involved in SEM/EBSD projects in strike-slip fault evolution and channel flow across the High Himalaya.
