Mat joined ICAS in Dec 2003 as a NERC Fellow after doing post-doctoral research at Harvard. He later became a lecturer and then reader. He left in 2012 to take up a professorship at the University of York.

His interests lie in understanding the processes controlling the composition to inform policy decisions involving human health and climate change. He uses a variety of numerical models ranging from simple photochemical box models to complex global atmospheric chemistry transport models. However, models by themselves are of limited use and so Mat is involved in field programs such as ITOP and AMMA that collect observations of atmospheric composition that can be used to assess and validate models.
