Biography

Kirsty Pringle is a research fellow and aerosol support scientist in the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Research at the University of Leeds. Her research focuses on the role that tiny particles of e.g. sea salt, sulfates or soot play in affecting the climate. In her work she uses the GLObal Model of Aerosol Processes (GLOMAP) to simulate the transport of these tiny particles (aerosols) around the globe. She then uses the model to examine how the natural aerosol distribution is affected by human activities and what the implications are for the Earth’s climate.

In her PhD Kirsty examined the interaction of aerosol particles and clouds, since this time she has extended this work to examine the possibility of seeding clouds with aerosol particles to produce brighter clouds to help offset the warming from greenhouse gasses. She is currently involved in a project to quantify the uncertainty in aerosol modelling in order to identify sources of uncertainty so future research can effectively target these areas.

GLOMAP is a complex computer model that calculates the full aerosol lifecycle from the emission of particles, through atmospheric processing to deposition. In her role as aerosol support scientist she also helps maintain and develop the model to ensure that new scientific findings are incorporated and helps other group members use the model for their own research.
