Title:Ice nucleation by mineral dust
Supervisors: Dr Ben Murray, Dr Steven Dobbie
Start date: 1st January 2010
Outline:
A critical factor in the lifetime of clouds is the onset of precipitation, which is strongly influenced by the temperature at which liquid water droplets freeze into ice. Homogenous ice nucleation occurs at around -38oC, however heterogeneous nucleation can occur at higher temperatures and mineral dust is thought to be an efficient ice nuclei. The aim of this research project is to study the ice nucleation ability of the clay minerals in immersion mode.
