Project Title: Supermarkets and sustainable lifestyles: The potential role of retailers in facilitating change in consumption patterns
Supervisors: Dr Louise Ellis, Dr William Young
Start Date: 1st October 2009
Project outline: Today, most of the products affluent societies consume on an every-day basis are bought from supermarket outlets. Taking into account the key role of big grocers in supporting and influencing contemporary lifestyles, and the detrimental ecological effects of current consumption levels, my research project investigates the relationship between UK retailers' decision-making regarding the selection/design of their own-brand products, and pro-environmental consumer behaviour along the purchase, use, and post-use stages of product life cycle. The project focuses on big grocers' role as producers (of their own-brand products) rather than as retailers (of branded products). In particular, it seeks to establish whether current own-brand marketing activities reflect and communicate potential environment-related corporate decisions, and if so, whether the communication of such activities influences consumer behaviour toward environmentally sustainable consumption patterns.
