Project outline

The purpose of the CLOUD project is to study and quantify the proposed effects of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) on climate through the medium  of atmospheric aerosol. There are two mechanisms by which GCRs are believed to drive the climate: the ion-aerosol clear-air effect and the ion-aerosol near-cloud effect. The clear-air effect deals with the formation of new particles from gases while the near-cloud effect refers to the facilitation of ice nucleation by overcharged aerosols in the boundaries of insulating clouds. I plan to investigate both of these mechanisms using the GLOMAP aerosol model.
