Biography

I am currently Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for promoting inter-disciplinary, impact-oriented research across the University of Leeds. I support and coordinate the University’s cross-cutting, inter-disciplinary themes on global challenges relating to energy, water, cities, food, health, culture and high value engineering, as well as its platforms in climate change, the social sciences, data analytics and structural biology. I am also helping to develop the University’s strategic partnerships.

Research

I work on environmental and climate policy and in related areas such as energy and development policy. My work focuses on the performance of different forms of policy and regulation and the impacts of new forms of governance, especially on the environmental impacts of economic development. I also have a particular interest in cities and climate change, and in recent years have worked extensively on low carbon development for cities in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. I have also worked on corporations and climate change, and on related issues such as corporate social responsibility.

I specialize in inter-disciplinary, applied and impact-oriented research, and frequently work closely with governments, NGOs and community groups and industry bodies at the international, national and local levels. I have been a contributor to international initiatives such as the Global Commission on Economy and Climate and have worked closely with the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change and the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as well as with various government ministries and agencies internationally.

I am also Deputy Director of the ESRC Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy, Editor of Environmental Policy and Governance and a Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol.
