Yorkshire people make the best neighbours in the UK

Lucie Middlemiss was interviewed by the Yorkshire Post on August 2, 2012 about the results of a survey which found that Yorkshire people made the best neighbours in the UK. The article explored how community and neighbourly relations have changed over time.
In general, people have become less dependent on local relationships and tend to have more contact with people who share their interests, (for instance work, education, hobbies). However, this is not true for everyone, and the poorer and less educated you are (the more working class), the more dependent relationships you are likely to have in your neighbourhood. While relationships associated with neighbourhood are weaker for many, there is also some evidence of a resurgence of interest in local communities as people try to find meaning in a consumerist society. In other words reconnecting with your neighbours can be a way to make yourself feel less alone in a modern, competitive world.
