Mærsk Oil

Maersk Oil and its subsidiary companies are part of the Maersk Group with headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. Maersk Oil is one of the world's top 25, independent, international oil and gas producing companies and has an oil production of about 600,000 barrels per day and a gas production of 1,000 million cubic feet per day. The company is active in oil exploration and production around the world and has a solid growth strategy in place. Maersk Oil has been a front runner in developing solutions tailored to meet North Sea challenges, especially in low permeability, high porosity chalk and limestone reservoirs, where pipe scaling is a major issue and scale precipitation in pipes leads to clogging. This mineral scaling directly increases production costs by diminishing the lifetime of the production equipment. Maersk Oil uses a series of scale inhibitors to try to minimise these problems but success is so far compromised because of a lack of fundamental knowledge about dynamic mineral scale formation and inhibition, specifically related to the processes occurring at the pipe-fluid interface and the adhesion and interactions of scale minerals on pipe surfaces

Role:

Maersk Oil is responsible for practical, hands-on training and research in oil field chemistry and scaling in oil pipelines; for providing access to existing data on pipe scaling in the oil field environment and samples of scales from a variety of sites. The hosted fellow will be involved in the daily production chemistry for a production chemist in an oil company and will work on a dedicated research project on the "Dynamics of scale deposition in oilfield pipelines".

Key Competences and Facilities:

The Maersk Oil team is specialized in planning oil well stimulation and scaling inhibition in pipelines and production equipment surfaces; Maersk Oil will provide access to specialized samples (scaled pipes, as well as cores) and access to their long-term database on scaling related production problems.

Key Persons

Pernille J. Raahauge, Team Leader

Production Chemist and the daily responsible for pipeline scaling in the production technology group; 5 years experience in production chemistry and 4 years experience in Health, Safety and Environment.

Hans-Henrik Kogsbøll

Director Production Technology with 25+ years experience with reservoir/well chemistry, well stimulation, well technology and planning.

Finn Engstrøm

Principal Petrophysicist with 25+ years experience in petrophysics of low permeability chalk reservoirs, with extensive experience from Joint Industry Projects.

Previous Training Programs and Research:

The Maersk Oil team has trained 10 PhD Students on secondments from public sector organizations in the last 5 years. Maersk Oil has so far not been involved in any EC Marie Curie training networks.
