Attempted to use magnetic gradiometer twice on North Wales MSc field trip. Didn't work properly either time with 3 different batteries. Investigated post-trip with Kirk. When using one of the new (GPR) batteries it worked OK, but identified three batteries with which it didn't work; voltage is not a good discriminant as one of the batteries that failed had a higher voltage (from multi-meter) than the one that worked. Suggested to Kirk to buy an additional six batteries and get rid of all the old ones.
When reading manual noticed that there will be small current drain during storage and hence keeping battery in unit during storage will cause deep discharge and hence kill the battery. Therefore TAKE THE BATTERY OUT WHEN YOU STORE THE EQUIPMENT.
