Laterites in the Afar Straitoid Series

Afar Stratoid Series (4-1Ma) from the Dobi Graben in the west of the Afar Depression. The Stratoid Series covers about two thirds of the Afar Depression. Here it forms the walls of the valley. The pale deposits on the valley floor are salts and evaporites. The pale brown/orange layer in the bottom photograph is laterite (weathered rock/soil) formed between lava flows (scale: Jon Blundy, University of Bristol). Photographs by Lorraine Field, University of Bristol, January, 2008.
