Overview
What is MEnv Environmental Science?
This programme is a four-year Undergraduate Masters degree (MEnv). Students on this four-year scheme enjoy the unique opportunity of spending their third year in Australia, Canada or USA, and take Masters-level modules during Year 4, in order to achieve the Undergraduate Masters degree. Students benefit enormously from spending a year overseas, which broadens their horizons and demonstrates a high degree of independence; these are attributes which are highly valued by prospective employers.
A better understanding of the Earth's physical and chemical processes is an important and much-valued skill in the study of the environment. The MEnv in Environmental Science aims to give students a wide perspective on the ways in which different aspects of our environment interact, while providing them with the relevant skills to become effective environmental managers. The MEnv degree is a variant of the already well established and successful BA Environmental Science programme (the first two years are identical). It forms part of the best-established Earth and Environment year abroad programme in the UK.
Why study MEnv Environmental Science?
The course draws on expertise from across the University of Leeds to offer applied interdisciplinary insights into the study of real-world environmental problems. You will be expected to deal with the wide range of issues confronting environmental managers or aid workers. The skills you learn will help you to apply the sophisticated techniques available to environmental scientists for solving environmental problems.
Throughout the programme, students are provided with scientific methodology in geography, biology, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences, and may also pursue topics, such as sustainable development, air pollution or environmental risk management. At the end of the course you will have a thorough command of the subject and of transferable and environmental skills needed to respond to issues of interest to policy makers, non-governmental organisations, industry and the wider public.
Two aspects make this degree distinct:
- The year abroad study will count academically towards the degree. You will gain in-depth knowledge and experience studying environmental science in a North American university.
- The integrated Masters study is distinctive. After the third year spending year 3 abroad, you will return to Leeds to pursue a final year to qualify for the Master in Environmental Science (MEnv, BSc) degree. The integrated masters and undergraduate degree combination is distinctive. You will have a very wide choice of modules to choose from in your fourth year, and have a great degree of freedom to choose your focus.
