Myron Thomas, BSc Geological Sciences 2003
I graduated Leeds Geological Sciences BSc in 2003 and I currently work at the University of Manchester for a research group which specialises in North African geology. I have undertaken fieldwork in several frontier areas of North Africa including Morocco, Tunisia and the Saharan desert of southern Libya. Working with local guides we spent several days camping with provisions in the desert and working on unexplored cliff sections. I also spend half my time on a PhD which is looking at submarine "turbidite deposits" in Sicily. This has involved many weeks of fieldwork and I have become very familiar with the area and some if its locals. Both the work and phD are funded by Oil exploration companies through the research group and so its useful to build a rapport with, and an understanding of how companies work. I still maintain a link with people at Leeds University who are kind enough to give advice for my research. The introduction to Geology I got at Leeds university during my undergraduate set me up well for my current position. In particular, a rigorous knowledge of fieldwork was a key part of the course, with fieldwork in Scotland, Ireland, Cyprus and Greece. This gave me a passion for fieldwork which has led me to starting a PhD. I would certainly recommend Leeds for Geology, knowing now that it is highly regarded, and is a good course within a friendly department.
