Lisa Hart, BSc Geological Sciences 2007
During my 4 years at Leeds University I studied a wide range of subjects, which has given me a very solid geological knowledge base. This has helped me endlessly in my job as you never know when you will need to call upon it, it is key in underdstanding different mineralisation styles of ore depositis of a variety of minerals.
I have worked as an Exploration Geologist in Western Australia for BHP Biliiton Iron Ore for the last 3 years . During this time I have been involved in many projects from large-scale, multi drill rig, near-mine resources to remote, small-scale target generation programmes. I have worked on projects from the initial planning stages through to programme reporting and geological modelling.
Three months ago I was lucky enough to be chosen for a secondment to work as a Project Geologist in Liberia, West Africa. It has always been a dream of mine to work in Africa and so far I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. I am so lucky to be able to travel around such an interesting and culturally diverse country and to be involved on several remote projects in areas most people would not get the chance to visit. Working with the local people and understanding their culture is one of the main challenges I really enjoy over here. The mineralisation style is also far more complex than West Australian deposits, so understanding the geology of the ore body is also really interesting.
