Tim Andrews
Graduated 2010

Why did you choose to study for a PhD? (Interested, opportunity for travel, clear career goals....
I have always been interested in understanding how the world works, so it was a logical next step for me after my undergraduate studies.   I was also keen on exploiting the opportunities that studying for a PhD allows, such as travelling for conferences/workshops (I visited many places in Europe and North America during my period of study).

What have you done since you graduated?
I have been writing publications for peer-reviewed journals about my thesis work.  I have been doing this for two reasons, i) to tell the world about my exciting discoveries (!), and, ii) improve my CV to help further my career, especially as I plan to stay in science.

Has your degree been useful to you in finding work?
Absolutely.  I will be staying in scientific research, and a PhD gives you the training to be an independent researcher.

What are your long-term career goals?
I would like to continue working in scientific research.  My research so far as been looking at the physical science behind climate change.  As climate change impacts all of society, I feel it is important to stay in the field and help improve our physical understanding and future predictions.

What would you say to someone else who may be considering studying a PhD at SEE?
Go for it.  SEE provides a great environment for PhD students to really succeed.  Leeds is also a great place to be – it’s got the city life but also the Yorkshire dales just up the road.
