Sustainability Courses

The suite of sustainability masters programmes are led by staff in the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI). With over 30 staff, SRI is one of the largest groups of inter-disciplinary researchers in Europe, working on the different dimensions of sustainability. Research within the SRI is based largely on the environmental social sciences and draws upon aspects of geography, sociology, politics, planning, economics, management, development studies and science and technology studies. Our broader activities combine social and natural sciences in leading-edge, interdisciplinary research.

There’s an increasing demand for sustainability professionals. The drive for a low-carbon economy needs people with in-depth understanding of sustainability issues. Meanwhile forward-thinking businesses are looking for people with postgraduate skills in sustainability. Individual programme pages can tell you more about the destinations of our graduates. But the headlines are clear:

“Pale or dark, it's a green job bonanza”
Sunday Times, 22/11/09

“UK 'green' job market swelling amid recession”
International Business Times 10/5/09

“Green degrees target solutions to climate change issues; Universities are meeting the growing demand for environmental skills with a range of 'green' degrees”
(Guardian 18 September 2010)

At Leeds we offer a suite of sustainability masters programmes that are highly integrated but also offer a different subject specialism or disciplinary perspective. Each of the programmes is structured to offer a common sustainability foundation and then there are different pathways through modules offered by the School and related departments to produce each distinctive MSc Sustainability programme.

The programmes are taught by sustainability specialists with experience of academic research in sustainability and in applying their knowledge in a range of contexts around the world.

One of our recent graduates on MSc Sustainability in 2009-10 commented “What an excellent way to have the sustainability professionals of tomorrow already interacting with each other today to truly understand their complementary but sometimes competing agendas.”

Full details of the programme structures and the content of the modules are given on the pages dedicated to each individual programme, see our list of programmes
