Sustainability and Environment Courses

At Leeds we offer a long-established and successful suite of interdisciplinary courses that cover many dimensions of sustainability and environment. The courses are delivered by members of the internationally-recognised Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) at the School of Earth and Environment. With over 30 staff, SRI is one of the largest sustainability research groups in Europe. Research is based largely on the environmental social sciences, combining social and natural sciences in leading-edge research.

Watch what our students and graduates have to say about our Sustainability programmes

We have recently refreshed our sustainability and environment postgraduate courses so that they align even more closely with the challenges of sustainability, and the skills that employers say they need from graduates in order to tackle those challenges. Each of the four courses provides a specialist route studying challenges, with a broad range of optional modules allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests.

Employability: There is an increasing demand for sustainability, environment and development, climate change and environmental policy professionals. The drive for more sustainable ways of living, and a low-carbon economy means organisations are looking for people with an in-depth understanding of sustainability issues. Students who complete an SRI-led Masters course find employment as researchers, consultants and managers across a wide range of sectors including government, non-governmental organisations, development, environmental and engineering consultancies, retailers and resource-intensive industries. Several of our graduates proceed to PhD research each year.

Gaining practical experience and professional accreditation are important ways to differentiate yourself from other graduates. Courses at SRI offer opportunities to engage in UK-based field visits. Overseas fieldwork opportunities are available to students on most programmes at additional cost.

The MSc Sustainability and Consultancy course is accredited by the UK's leading professional institution for environmental professionals, the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) providing you with free student membership, access to local networking events and to industry updates and communications throughout your course.
