Earth Sciences Courses

We have one of the largest ranges of vocational Earth Science Masters degrees in the UK, all with excellent links to industry.

The MScs in Exploration Geophysics and MSc Engineering Geology have been running successfully for over 50 years, and the MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics for over 15 years.

You will be taught by active research staff with a wide range of research interests which inform their teaching.

Leeds was equal 3rd for Earth sciences (QS World University Rankings 2017)

Employability

In specialist areas like these a Masters degree is often required by employers, and gives you much better employment prospects than a four year undergraduate Masters degree.

All our degrees have an excellent employment track-record, with almost 100% of graduates gaining relevant employment within a short time of completing their course.

Our degrees also provide you with a suitable background to go on to PhD studies.

MSc Engineering Geology

Prepares you for professional practice in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering.

It provides you with a grounding in the application of geological principles to a wide range of fields within Civil Infrastructure and Mining Engineering.

Engineering Geologists are found worldwide working on a wide range of problems from foundation and underground space design to the assessment of seismic, landslide and contaminated land risks.

Most students join Consulting Engineers and Environmental Consulting Companies; a few work for Ground Investigation Contractors and some go on to PhD studies.

MSc Exploration Geophysics

Prepares you to embark on a career in oil and gas exploration.

It provides you with a broad range of practical skills underpinned by a theoretical understanding that will equip you to become professionals in your chosen field.

Most students join oil, gas and minerals companies, or geophysical acquisition, processing and interpretation companies, or software companies. Some go on to PhD studies.

MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics

Prepares you for employment in the hydrocarbon or mining industries.

You will train in all aspects of applied structural geology and carry-out advanced training in the practical application of structural geology in interpreting seismic data as well as the principals underlying data acquisition and processing.

Most students join hydrocarbon or mining companies where as structural geologists they work closely with geophysicists and petrophysicists. Some students also go on to PhD studies.

MSc Petroleum Exploration

Designed to meet the demanding needs of petroleum industry, developing you and giving you with the right tools to be a highly skilled Petroleum Explorationist.

The course integrates the strengths of the University of Leeds – applied geophysics and structural geology, with the strengths of Jacobs University Bremen – petroleum system modelling and organic geochemistry, to create a Masters that is unique and distinct from any other course, globally.
