  1. The institute. ICAS is one of five research institutes in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds. ICAS has 29 academic staff engaged in research and teaching, about 50 postdoctoral researchers, and 50 PhD students. See our staff list.
  2. Teaching. ICAS academic staff lead or contribute to about 40 undergraduate and Masters level modules in the School. We coordinate the BSc in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science and the MRes in Physics of the Atmosphere, and we contribute major components of the BSc in Environmental Science. See our teaching.
  3. Breadth. ICAS deliberately maintains leading edge research expertise across all of climate and atmospheric science, including weather, air pollution, climate change, societal impacts, palaeo-climates, cloud physics, the cryosphere and Earth observation. See our research themes.
  4. Integration. Being part of the School of Earth and Environment enables us to integrate our research with the sustainability agenda and with broader research on the environment and Earth system. Our research is strongly integrated in university networks like water@leeds.
  5. Advancing knowledge. ICAS has an outstanding track record of advancing knowledge of the atmosphere and climate. Between 2008 and 2013 we published over 600 papers that have been cited more than 4000 times. Discoveries.
  6. Advanced models. ICAS scientists develop and use innovative atmospheric models to study aerosols, chemistry and air pollution, global climate, high resolution weather and climate processes, global agriculture, and palaeo-climate. In the last 5 years ICAS has participated in 80 funded projects and written more than 300 papers exploiting these models. We are major contributors to the development of the UK Unified Model through our Academic Partnership with the Met Office. Read more about modelling.
  7. Lab and field. ICAS conducts adventurous laboratory and field studies spanning scales from single ice crystals to synoptic weather systems. Our fieldwork ranges from the tropics to the poles, and deserts to the open ocean. We make extensive use of platforms such as research aircraft and ships to make in situ measurements, and remote sensing systems such as lidar, radar, both from the ground and on satellite.   8. Partnerships. Partnerships with leading research organisations ensure that ICAS research has impact beyond academia. We have a formal Academic Partnership and joint Professorships with the Met Office, and several staff within the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, the National Centre for Earth Observation and the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling. Longstanding collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has now led to a formal partnership. Read more about our partnerships.
  9. Researcher community. ICAS is a vibrant place to do a research degree or begin your career. We have over 50 PhD students and are part of the Leeds-York NERC Doctoral Training Partnership in Environmental Research. Our PhDs have gone on to become internationally leading academics.
  10. Impact. ICAS’s research has an impact on society in diverse ways, such as improving volcanic hazard prediction, influencing government policy on biofuels, and generating knowledge that leads to improved weather forecasts and climate projections. Three members of ICAS were also lead authors of the 2014 IPCC assessment.
